Research three social problems to discover what organizations, resources, or laws are in place now to address these social problems.

Part 1 – Complete the following chart using information from the lesson.

City Labor Children were being forced at an early age to work in industries that were extremely dangerous. They did this at the expense of their education and often times were injured or killed in the process.

They formed the national child labor committee which fought to address the issues with child labor. Slowly but surely through photographs, pamphlets ads and word of mouth, they encouraged others to put an end to child labor.

The great depression came in and caused an overhaul of the workforce prompting a swift end to child labor and focusing the labor on adults who were out of work.

Tenement Housing

Tenements were overcrowded, smelly, unsanitary and bore severe problems for all involved. Proper disposal of human waste was an issue. In addition, they were no fire codes so anything emergency that occurred often meant death to those living in the housing.

A housing law was enforced in 1867 that required landlords to build at least one toilet for every twenty residents. Of course, they were connected to sewer lines which led to safe removal of human waste. They were also required to install a form of ventilation.

People started taking notice and

The housing law did very little to counteract these unsafe conditions and so the tenement housing act had to be passed in 1901 to enforce what was said. This led to the forming of a committee that ensured these rules were followed.

Since there wasn’t a way to properly dispose of human waste, the sewage lined the streets daily. Many had no way to avoid it, and eventually the exposure to it led to viruses and diseases.

eventually an association was formed. This led to the public health act which led to an improved communication between local governing bodies.

The local government bodies were now in charge of sewage, water drains, waste disposal and lighting. This regulation ensured that things were being controlled and handled accordingly.

Evaluate the effectiveness of the Social Gospel movement in addressing the important social issues of the Industrial Age. In your answer, reflect on the immediate solutions as well as long-term effects.

The Social Gospel attempted to make sense of the various issues that arose during the Industrial Age. The Social Gospel led to the formation of many labor reform unions. Some of these unions were at the forefront of eradicating a lot of the issues that were battled during the Industrial Revolution. They encouraged many to stay hopeful while change was in movement. It also caused people to see things from an empathetic and moral viewpoint rather than a selfish one. A lot of the labor unions that were formed during this time paved the way for laws, regulations and associations that are still in effect today. The Social Gospel held its on in championing the fight that is the Industrial Revolution.
