XAT 2023 Question Paper - Essay

For the following questions answer them individually

Choose ONE of the three arguments given below and develop a coherent essay that critically evaluates it. Support your analysis with relevant claims, reasons and/or examples. The essay should not exceed 250 words. Argument I. Risk is the essential need of soul. The absence of risk produces a kind of boredom which paralyses in a different way from fear, but almost as much. Argument II. Rapid decarbonization to fulfill India’s Net Zero commitment will have business consequences. Argument III. Someone with half your IQ is making 10X as you because they aren’t smart enough to doubt themselves. Answer Question no. 1 if you choose Argument I. Answer Question no. 2 if you choose Argument II. Answer Question no. 3 if you choose Argument III. In today's world, when people talk of risk, they are mostly discussing a financial investment or a business decision. However, there are several types of risk - many of which are never considered or factored in while making decisions. For example, most people understand credit risk or financial risk, but rarely do we consider the moral risk or social risk of a decision. However, when it comes to the mind and soul of a person, these are exactly the types of risks that are relevant. And as people are risk-taking or risk-averse in a financial sense, they are similarly risk-taking or riskaverse when it comes to the other risks. Often, risk averse behaviour, in moral or social spheres, leads to an atrophy of the mind and a decay of the soul. When one thinks of social risk, the first example that comes to mind is the oftrepeated refrain - 'what will people say'. This one refrain prevents people from seeking out happiness and doing things that would truly make them happy. When people choose not take any social risk, they end up being inauthentic versions of themselves- an imposter of their true self. Similarly, when some one cannot risk failure in life choices, be it by leaving a job to start a business or choosing a field that they are well-suited for which isn't mainstream, they risk ossifying in life choices that prevent them from reaching their true potential. At a society level, when people refuse to testify to the truth or refuse to rise up to a tyrant because they cannot take the risk of failure, the society and the individual both suffer. Thus, risk is essential to reach one's true potential and to become one's authentic self. Without risk, there is no growth, and without growth, and individual will be a stunted version of themselves. The risk-reward framework that is often quoted for investment returns is also true for other forms of risk - the higher the risk, the greater the reward; for a person's mind and soul.

Argument ii. rapid decarbonization to fulfill india’s net zero commitment will have business consequences., argument iii. someone with half your iq is making 10x as you because they aren’t smart enough to doubt themselves., login to your cracku account, hello 👋, ready to unlock your success.

XAT 2023 Analysis

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) 2023 was conducted online on January 8, 2023, between 2 PM and 5:30 PM. The test had almost the same structure as last year. Three essay topics were provided. The test-taker had to select one.

The structure of the test along with suggested time allocation, good attempts, and estimated cut-offs based on the feedback from IMS students and experts are in the table below:

The Question Paper consisted of :

Part A questions invited negative marks of – 0.25 for each incorrect response. In addition, there was a penalty of  -0.1 mark for every unattempted question after 8 unattempted questions.

essay in xat 2023

Overall, XAT-2023 was similar in difficulty level to XAT 2022. The DM Section was on par with the same last year with a few questions in DM being difficult. The VALR section was slightly more challenging than the same section in XAT 2022. The QA-DI section was slightly easier compared with XAT 2022.

Based on the inputs received from students and IMS mentors who appeared for the test and based on the actual cutoffs over the last two years, we estimate the following cut-offs for XLRI BM and HRM programs:

XLRI BM Program

XLRI HRM Program

SECTIONAL ANALYSIS

essay in xat 2023

Note: For both BM and HRM programs of XLRI, the overall cutoff is significantly greater than the sum of the sectional cutoffs. Therefore, the number of good attempts for different sections has been estimated from the point of view of a student who wishes to maximize the score in that section.

Verbal and Logical Ability Section (26 questions)

There were 14 Reading Comprehension questions and 12 Verbal Ability/Reasoning questions. The Verbal ability/Verbal Reasoning questions were a fair mix of grammar, vocabulary, and reasoning-based questions (Critical Reasoning, Correct statements and Jumbled Paragraphs). The 14 RC questions were distributed among four passages and one poem. The poem-based RC was difficult. The remaining four passages were of 200 – 450 words each approximately; they had a mixture of mostly medium to difficult questions. Many of the questions were inferential and application-based.

An attempt of about 13-14 questions in this section in about 55-60 minutes, with about 75-80% accuracy would be considered a good attempt.

Decision Making (2 2 questions)

This section consisted of 22 questions. There was one Quantitative DM set.

The section consisted of 6 sets of 3 questions each and 2 sets of 2 questions each. Most of the questions were on Ethical Dilemma. As usual, some questions had a fair deal of ambiguity – in that either no answer seemed correct or more than one option appeared correct. Overall, the questions were of medium difficulty. Therefore, the choice of sets/questions to attempt would have depended mainly on your personal preferences and strengths.

In about 50-55 minutes, an attempt of about 11-12 questions with about 75-80% accuracy would be considered to be good.

Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (28 questions)

This section was of moderate level of difficulty. As a whole, it was slightly easier than XAT-2022. Out of the 28 questions in the section, 22 were on Quantitative Ability and 6 were on Data Interpretation.

There were two sets of Data Interpretation with 3 questions each, one was based on a scatter plot, radar and bar graph while the other was on table.

Following is the break-up of the questions in the section:

An attempt of about 17-18 questions (with about 80 percent accuracy) in about 55-60 minutes would be considered a good attempt.

Part B: Keyboard Check

General Knowledge

The 25 GK questions comprised 18 current affairs questions and 7 static GK questions. Overall, the GK section was slightly more difficult than XAT 2022.. 15 questions were based on national events, 10 questions were based on international events and miscellaneous topics As usual, the questions covered a wide range of areas and gave no special advantage to specialists in any one area.

To maximize the score in this section, one should have attempted 12 questions seriously. Additionally, as there was no negative marking in this section, all the remaining questions should also have been attempted. A score of 6 – 7 would be a good score in this section.

Essay Writing

Three topics were provided. The test-taker had to select one topic and write an essay in around  250 words.

The topics for the essay writing task were:

  • Risk is the essential need of the soul, the absence of which produces a kind of boredom which paralyses in a different way from fear, but almost as much.
  • Rapid decarbonization to fulfil India’s net zero commitments will have business consequences.
  • Someone with half your IQ is making 10x as you, because they are not smart enough to doubt themselves.

Overview of XAT 2023

Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) 2023 was conducted from 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm on January 8, 2023. There were various changes introduced in the exam this year.

The test was divided into three parts. The first part constituted three sections, namely Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning (VALR), Decision Making (DM), and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (QADI). The total time allotted for attempting these questions was 175 minutes.

The second part, added this year, comprised Mock Keyboard Testing with a time limit of 5 minutes.

The third part included 25 General Knowledge questions and one essay writing question. The total time allotted for this section was 30 minutes.

Each question carried 1 mark and attracted -0.25 marks for every incorrect attempt and -0.1 marks per question after 8 un-attempted questions. The General Knowledge section had no negative marking.

The detailed analysis of all the sections is given below.

XAT 2023 Analysis: Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning

The Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning section followed the same pattern as last year. The level of difficulty of the section was also similar to XAT 2022. The section had 26 questions out of which 12 questions, divided into 4 sets were of the RC section. The poem was only one and had a difficulty similar to last year level of difficulty. There were no questions of paragraph jumble while fill in the blanks had 1 question.

The breakup of the VALR section was as follows:

XAT 2023 Analysis: Decision Making

This year, the number of questions in the section increased from 21 to 22. There were 6 sets of 3 questions, 2 sets of 2 questions and 1 set of 3 questions this year. However, the 1 set comprising 3 questions introduced the old DI type decision making questions. Thus it is slightly tougher than last year. A good attempt in this section is 15 to 17 questions.

The breakup was as follows:

XAT 2023 Analysis: Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation

In comparison to last year, the Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation was moderately more difficult. As compared to the 3 sets of DI last year, there was only 1 set in XAT 2023. Most questions of QA were from arithmetic followed by algebra and numbers. A good attempt in this section would be 16 to 18 questions.

The break-up was as follows:

XAT 2023 Analysis: General Knowledge & Essay

As per the expectations, the General Knowledge section comprised 25 questions. The General Knowledge section was similar to last year in terms of difficulty and exam pattern. There was a balance between current affairs and static GK. A good score in this section would be 10+.

In the essay section, the candidates had three options to choose which were as follows:

  • Decarbonisation by India to achieve the target of zero carbon emissions is hampering the Indian industries
  • Half IQ…nX returns
  • Taking Risks in Life

What is the XAT Essay Writing Test?

XAT essay writing section is very similar to the Written Ability Test (WAT) which is conducted by IIMs. However, the only difference is that all XAT takers have to do the essay section in the exam, while only the shortlisted candidates appear for the WAT round.

One must remember that the percentile score does not include essay performance. But worry not, as the essay score does carry some weightage in the calculation of the final merit and it varies from college to college.

XAT Essay Writing Evaluation Parameters 📄

The main objective behind giving the XAT essay writing section is to evaluate the candidates based on their ability to think logically. The examiner tests the candidates’ ability to express themselves effectively. Speaking of which, we have listed the evaluation parameters for your essay as follows:

Structure of Essay 🏗️

In the essay, the first thing that the examiner checks is whether the essay flows logically or not from one paragraph to another. If the candidate has not logically stated their arguments in chronological order then there are chances of marks deduction. Keep in mind that proper structuring of sentences will fetch you marks.

Knowledge 🧠

Part 1 of the essay tests your subject knowledge while Part 2 of the essay tests if you are aware of the ongoing debates in the public media as well as important events, personalities, laws etc.

All the facts incorporated in your essay need to have some weightage to earn marks.

Creativity 💡

As future managers, the candidates need to produce new ideas as part of their job. Hence, the evaluators will expect your essay to be full of innovative ideas.

Lastly, you must keep in mind that you don’t make any grammatical mistakes like spelling errors, or punctuation errors as there will be a penalty.

XAT 2023, by XLRI Jamshedpur for admission to their Business Management and Human Resource Management programmes, was successfully conducted today, Jan 8th, 2023 in the computer-based format.

Structure of the Exam

The test was slightly different from last year’s  with the addition of one question in Decision making and the 5-minute Mock keyboard test. The total number of questions this year was 76 and 25 in Part-I and Part-III respectively.

Part-I comprised three sections:

  • Verbal and Logical Reasoning
  • Decision-Making
  • Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation

Part-II comprised Mock Keyboard testing and Part-III contained General Knowledge questions

The duration of the test was 175 minutes for the first part and 30 minutes for the second.

All questions carried equal marks with negative marking of 0.25 for a wrong answer. There was a negative marking of 0.1 for un-attempted questions in Part-1, for such questions over and above eight un-attempted questions.

The section on General Knowledge, however, did not have any negative marking and the marks scored in this section would be used for evaluation only after the initial screening i.e., these will not be used for the shortlisting of candidates for the GWPI round.

The break-up of the questions across sections is as below.

For the essay, students were to choose from among three topics given to them and write the essay on any one of them. There was a word limit of 250 for the essay. Students had one additional essay to choose from compared to a total of two essays that they had last year.

The topics, reproduced based on feedback from students were as below

  • Risk is the essential need of soul. The absence of risk produces a kind of boredom which paralyses in a different way from fear but almost as much.
  • Rapid decarbonisation to fulfil India’s net-zero commitment will have business consequences.
  • Someone with half your IQ is making 10x as you because they are not smart enough to doubt themselves.
